Example of Rule of Thirds:
Step 1: Pretend there is an imaginary grid on top of the photo (3 by 3).
Step 2: Line up the objects in the picture with the lines and intersecting points (see below)
- The tree falls on two intersecting points on the right side of the image. This is the focus of the image. The horizon line (where the ground meets the sky) falls along the bottom line also. Our gaze is naturally directed to the intersecting points.

The above image uses the Rule of Thirds: Our gaze is directed toward Harry's hand on Buck-beak's beak and on Harry's gaze. Harry's hand falls along the top left intersecting points.
